Senior Division Champions - North Haven Indians

Congratulations to the North Haven Indians

Senior Division Champions

By Neil Kelsey

The 74th season of what is now known as the Vantis Life Baseball League ended Sunday with the crowning of a Senior Division Champion at New Britain Stadium.

The CATIC Bombers squared off with the North Haven Indians. The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning.  Jake Landry led off with a fly ball to right field which was misplayed, allowing Landry to reach first. Landry moved to second on a passed ball, and Zach Caputo dropped a nice bunt, reaching base on an overthrow which scored Landry. A single by Garrett Fisher and a wild pitch put runners on second and third.  With two outs, Jack Neumuth drove a single to left field scoring Caputo. The Indians left fielder, Peyton Farina, threw a bullet to catcher Joe Gargano who applied the tag on Fisher for the third out, keeping the score at 2-0.

North Haven left a runner at second base in the fourth and threatened again in the bottom of the fifth. A walk and a passed ball put Nick Perillie at second with one out. Joe Wenzel lifted a fly ball to right field and Perillie attempted to tag up, but left the bag early and was called out on appeal.

CATIC added an insurance run in the top of the sixth as Neumuth drove in Fisher for a 3-0 lead. North Haven's Jake Bencivengo hit a one out single, stole second, and was driven home for the Indians first run by Peyton Farina. With two outs, Steven Erbe drove a deep fly ball to left field which was caught on the warning track.

The Indians' starting pitcher Griffin Bottomley retired the Bombers in order, setting the stage for the dramatic bottom of the seventh. After two walks wrapped around a fly ball, starter Trevor Moulton handed the ball to reliever Austin Davis. A single by Perillie scored Tom Myjak and put runners on the corners. Wenzel singled to center field, scoring Joe Gargano and tying the game. With one out and runners at second and third, Paul Barbiero drove a walk off single to the outfield to score Perillie and secure the championship for North Haven, 4-3.

Griffin Bottomley pitched a complete game for the Indians, surrendering three unearned runs.

Congratulations to New Britain Parks & Recreation

Junior Division Champions

By Neil Kelsey

Under sunny skies in the second Championship game at New Britain Stadium, New Britain Parks and Recreation jumped out early and held on to defeat the Longmeadow River Dogs 3-0 to claim the 2019 Vantis Life Baseball League Junior Division title. A triple by Will Estronza followed a leadoff walk to drive in the first run in the top of the first. A fielder’s choice by Owen Pestka gave New Britain a 2-0 lead before Longmeadow came to bat. Nate Kumm led off the top of the second inning, battling through a seven pitch at bat, before lining a double to left. Nate would later score what proved to be the game’s final run.

Frank Facente started for Longmeadow, settling down after the first few batters to strike out five over six innings to keep the Riverdogs in the game. Longmeadow was unable to mount a rally, however as Chris Gibbs went the distance for New Britain, scattering six hits and striking out seven to earn the shutout win.

Congratulations to the Wallingford Cardinals

Prep Division Champions

By Neil Kelsey

In a tight, well-played game by both teams, the Wallingford Cardinals defeated the Vernon Vagabonds 1-0 to win the Vantis Life Baseball League 2019 Prep Division Championship.

Wallingford used aggressive base running to manufacture a run in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Casey lined a one out single to right center field. Following a fly ball to center, Casey stole second on a pickoff attempt. On the next pitch, Vernon catcher Mason Breton, who successfully picked off a runner to end the first inning, threw through to second as Casey broke to third.  With two outs, Tyler was awarded home on a balk.

The game featured solid pitching and defense. Zach Ginter pitched a complete game shutout for the Cardinals, allowing just two hits. Alex Pelletier started for Vernon, allowing two hits over five innings and striking out four.
